My mother in law bought a new MDX to replace her old MDX. Very nice vehicle. I just want to know what she plans to do with her “I only drive it on weekends so it just sits in the garage most of the time” car. I started with subtle hints until this weekend when I just came right out with it.
1993, less than 50,000 miles. I know everything that was ever done to this car as far as maintenance, which has been performed like clockwork. Toughest time this car ever had was when my father in law drive back and forth to Vegas once. I don’t think the hard top has ever been on the car, it just sits on the rack in the garage. It’s not the fastest (6 cylinder), or the prettiest Mercedes ever made, but I would be happy to be its next owner.

M104 will take silly amounts of boost on stock internals.

Yes but still M120, in all of its four valve glory. Or if he has a lot of money to spend, M275

They all have their merits.

Dailying a V12 can’t be that much fun can it?
You get single digit MPGs.

My thoughts exactly.

False. I get about 19 average in my daily driver S600, which is a Twin turbo V12. Though it does take premium only...

Big mistake!

I’m guessing this is the 3.2 liter M104 and not the 3.0, right? The 3.2 has a much better torque curve and that would be preferable for a cruiser like this. Head gaskets and wiring harnesses are trouble spots though. Either way, nice car. This is my favorite SL bodystyle, although I might be biased because I had a poster of one of these on my wall when I was a teenager in the 1990s.

Oh silly silly man. I had a BMW 750il...those 12 cylinders made we weep daily....and made me weep more when it needed a repair.

3.2 liter, yes sir. I did a bit of googling for common issues, and found exactly what you mention, along with hydraulic pump issues for the top, and rubber replacement (strut mounts, motor mounts and flexdiscs on the driveshaft) which seems like common sense on a 23 year old car, distributor cap/wire replacement if not already done, Luckily, I can check to see what has already been done via the paperwork they have for all things done to the car. All dependent on whether she decides to sell it, and sell it to me.

That was all her choice. She loves em.

I like my 2009, but the newer one has a lot of transmission issues reported, and electrical gremlins. She may not like Acura after this one.

I hope it works out. I have an old E320 with the 3.2L M104 and I’m a big fan of that engine overall.
